From 1998 to 2000 the Cabell Prize was awarded annually for the best original work related to James Branch Cabell. Sponsored by VCU Libraries and the James Branch Cabell Library Associates, the prize recognized:

1999  Michael Keith. Liner notes for Keith’s performance of Deems Taylor’s Jurgen: Symphonic Poem for Orchestra, Op. 17 and Jurgen: Arrangement for Piano Four Hands.

2000  William H. Patterson, Jr. “The Heir of James Branch Cabell: The Biography of the Life of the Biography of the Life of Manuel (A Comedy of Inheritances).” An essay about Cabell’s influence on Robert A. Heinlein.
